Union Hospital’s 2011 Annual Appeal
The Family Center Emergency Department
In early 2011, Union Hospital will embark on a very special project to benefit families with young children. The project involves creating a Family Centered Emergency Department within the hospital that will provide a patient friendly waiting room and exam areas more suitable for children. This renovation project will allow Union Hospital to provide more efficient care to our pediatric patients and will also help support the family centered care model we hope to achieve by creating an environment that is more welcoming and suitable for children and their families.
The goal of this renovation project is to provide our youngest patients a sense of comfort and security when they arrive in the Family Centered Emergency Department for treatment. By creating a space that is visually appealing and less threatening, we can reduce the amount of anxiety and fear children have when emergency services are needed and increase the likelihood of their cooperation in care. A room filled with child sized equipment, comfortable exam tables and familiar character themes will help to bring about a sense of calm and support. A family waiting area will also be included in the remodel so children and their families will be separated from the general population emergency room patients.
In 2009, Union Hospital’s Emergency Department saw a total of 30,286 patients of which, 9,050 were children. Since our pediatric patient numbers have increased over 17% from 2008, we are highly motivated to complete this project to keep pace with the anticipated continued growth and needs of this patient population.
With the goal of raising $200,000 to support this project, the Union Hospital Foundation will be providing outreach through an Annual Appeal for Support to our trustees, physicians, staff and the community at large. Every donation received will help us achieve our goal of creating a Family Centered Emergency Department to provide a better experience and outcome for the youngest patients we serve.
